The story

The $5 completed the ECCB’s polymer family, which began in May 2019 with the $50 note. It was the first new ECCB series since 1993 and the first printed in vertical format. The front portrait was photographed by Peter Grugeon in 1977, when the Queen was 51. The back combines Trafalgar Falls in Dominica and Admiral’s House in Antigua and Barbuda, so the note shows two member islands. The ECCB said the polymer $5 would keep the features of the paper $5, which showed the same two landmarks. The polymer and paper notes continue to circulate together.

Front

Engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara, pearl necklace, earring and sash (no name is printed, catalogues identify her), orange fish (a common carp per banknotes.com), hanging magenta Fuchsia fulgens blossoms, green-throated carib hummingbird with Nicotiana alata flowers, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank building in Basseterre (St Kitts), turtle in a triangular window, patterned triangular windows, the governor’s signature, text “Eastern Caribbean Central Bank”, “THESE NOTES ARE LEGAL TENDER FOR THE PAYMENT OF ANY AMOUNT” and “Governor”.

Back

Trafalgar Falls (Dominica), Admiral’s House (Antigua & Barbuda) with an old cannon in the foreground, map of the member islands labelled Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, St Christopher & Nevis, Montserrat, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines and Grenada, magenta flower in a dark triangular window, turtle in a second triangular window, large green geometric shapes, text “Eastern Caribbean Central Bank”.
