The story

The front honours Braulio Carrillo Colina. He was born on 20 March 1800 in San Rafael de Oreamuno, Cartago, and trained as a lawyer. As head of state he authorised the issue of 30,000 pesos in vouchers of 5 and 10 pesos to pay public employees, which began the history of Costa Rican paper money. The back shows the tropical dry forest. This forest covers the lowlands (0–700 m) of Guanacaste and northern Puntarenas. With the rains it turns green and many seeds germinate. The deer and the Guanacaste tree are named in the BCCR’s note on the design.
