The story

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, which is why the front shows a farmer picking coffee cherries and a coffee plant, and the back repeats the coffee branch. The back shows the Simien Mountains, trees, a kudu antelope, elephants, and a caracal with a dead bird, a scene of Ethiopia’s highland wildlife. The Simien Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the lion in the underprint recalls Ethiopia’s long association with the Lion of Judah. The design is the long-running 5 birr type, with later issues adding a latent image and a segmented foil thread.

Front

Man picking coffee berries from a branch with a woven basket at his side, coffee plant with berries at right, lion’s head in the underprint (orange and green), outline map of Ethiopia as a latent image at left, triangular tactile mark for visually impaired users, Ge’ez and English texts "የኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ ባንክ", “National Bank of Ethiopia”, "ላምጪው፡አንዴከፈል፡ሕግ፡ያሰገዽዷል።", “Payable to the bearer on demand”, "አምስት፡ብር፡ FIVE BIRR", Governor’s signature with the caption "ገዥ GOVERNOR", dates “2009” and “2017” printed in orange, microtext band “NATIONAL BANK OF ETHIOPIA”.
