The story
Although the Maldives is not usually linked with football, the nation of atolls chose football as the theme of its 5 rufiyaa. The front figure is believed to be Captain Ali Ashfaq of the national team, with other traditional Maldivian sports and celebration imagery, and the dancers and drummers show boduberu, the traditional drum music of the islands. The back shows a Triton shell, a large sea snail found in Indo-Pacific reefs and a symbol of the Maldives’ marine life. The designs were redrawn by De La Rue with security features added, and the note belongs to the “Ran Dhiha Faheh” series, which uses a Dhivehi typeface made specially for it.
