Currency Information
The story
It represents a major change in Fiji's national identity, wildlife conservation, and currency history. The front features Kulawai (Red-throated Lorikeet), a rare forest-dwelling parrot native to Fiji. Its last confirmed sighting was in 1993, and it may already be extinct. By featuring this bird, Fiji chose to celebrate an extraordinary part of its natural heritage that people might never see again. The back tells another story of Fiji's unique biodiversity, featuring the Crested Iguana, an endangered reptile native to Fiji, alongside the Balaka Palm and Masiratu, a native flowering plant. Together, both sides celebrate Fiji's remarkable wildlife and plant life, turning an ordinary banknote into a tribute to the country's natural heritage.
