The story
Don Carlos Antonio López, Paraguay’s first constitutional president, was elected by Congress on 13 March 1844 and led the country until 1862, a period of modernisation. The locomotive on both sides symbolises the country’s early transportation infrastructure. The back shows the Palacio de los López in Asunción, ordered built in 1865 by his son Marshal Francisco Solano López as an official residence; it now houses the president’s offices and is the seat of government. The front’s lion with a Phrygian cap and “Paz y Justicia” is the Treasury emblem, and this was Paraguay’s second polymer note after the 2,000 guaraní.
Front
Portrait of Don Carlos Antonio López (first constitutional president of Paraguay) with the caption “Don Carlos Antonio López”, steam locomotive inside a transparent window at left, round national coat of arms with a star (“República del Paraguay”), round Treasury emblem of a lion with a Phrygian cap and the motto “Paz y Justicia”, chevron-shaped black transparent window at right, “BCP” monogram, orange-green guilloche rosette behind the value, texts “BANCO CENTRAL DEL PARAGUAY”, “EL BANCO CENTRAL DEL PARAGUAY RECONOCE ESTE BILLETE POR”, “Año 2022”, signature captions “Gerente General” and “Presidente”, legal-tender strip citing Law 489 of 29 June 1995.
Back
Palacio de los López (Government Palace in Asunción) with its central tower and flag, landscaped gardens and shrubs in front, sunburst-style guilloche above the palace, steam locomotive inside a transparent window at right, black transparent window with a reversed “BCP” at left, caption “PALACIO DE LOS LÓPEZ”, texts “REPUBLICA DEL PARAGUAY”, “CINCO MIL GUARANIES” and the Guaraní-language line “PO SU GUARANI” (the value in the Guaraní language; my reading, not confirmed by a source).
