The story

After the monarchy ended in 2008, Nepal Rastra Bank launched a series that replaced royal imagery with Nepal’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, which explains the mountain and wildlife. The front combines Mount Everest, called Sagarmatha in Nepal, with the Krishna Mandir, a stone temple in Patan Durbar Square from the 17th century, and a Garuda statue on a pillar facing it. The back shows deer walking beneath Himalayan peaks, but sources disagree on the species: some catalogues list the animal as a sambar deer (Cervus unicolor), while Wikipedia describes swamp deer (barasingha). The note carries Governor Chiranjibi Nepal’s signature, and the rhododendron watermark honours the national flower.
