The story
The Bunga Simpur is the national flower of Brunei and is often seen on large banners during national celebrations; the plant is a large shrub that can grow up to 10 meters tall. The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, shown in the window on both sides and as the aerial centrepiece on the back, was built and completed in 1958 and is a landmark of the capital. It is named after the Sultan’s father and is widely considered one of the most beautiful mosques in Asia-Pacific. Together, the designs pair the ruling Sultan with the national flower on the front and the capital’s religious and civic heart on the back. This 2024-dated design matches the one first released in 2017; a blog reports that the central bank released a new 2024-dated series on 9 March 2026, which I could not verify from an official source.
Front
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in dastar headgear and medalled uniform, Bunga Simpur (Dillenia suffruticosa) flowers and leaves, arched window showing the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque dome, Brunei coat of arms in an eight-pointed star, Arabic signature “Hassanal Bolkiah”, Malay and Islamic ornamental motifs, texts “NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM” and “BUNGA SIMPUR (DILLENIA SUFFRUTICOSA)”, caption “SULTAN”.
Back
Aerial view of Bandar Seri Begawan, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque with minaret and lagoon, small boat on the lagoon (uncertain), roads, trees and traditional pitched-roof buildings, arched mosque window, ornamental rosette, Arabic calligraphy of “Negara Brunei Darussalam”, caption “BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN”.
Watermark
No true paper watermark is visible; polymer notes don’t carry one. Numista lists a mosque image under watermark, but another catalogue says the watermark (shadow image) is unknown, so this is unconfirmed. The mosque appears in the transparent window instead.
