The story

The front shows the green terraces of Jabal al-Akhdar, while the back shows coconut trees along a falaj, two symbols of how Omanis farm in a dry land. Jabal al-Akhdar (“the Green Mountain”) is known for terraced gardens cut into steep slopes. The aflaj (plural of falaj) are ancient gravity-fed channels that carry mountain water to villages and farms; five of them were listed by UNESCO as World Heritage in 2006. The khanjar and crossed swords, drawn large on the front, form Oman’s national emblem and stand for the country’s heritage and identity. The note belongs to the new set of denominations (20, 10, 5, 1 and half rial, and 100 baisa) issued by the Central Bank of Oman in 2020.
