Currency Information
The story
Series 17 banknotes were released on Chakri Memorial Day, the day Thailand honours the founding of the Chakri dynasty, which suits a note whose back carries the dynasty’s first two kings. The 20 baht is the lowest-value baht banknote. The back shows Rama I, who founded the dynasty and built the Grand Palace, and his son Rama II, with a mural scene from the Panji (Inao) tales at the lower right, a nod to Rama II’s role as a patron and poet. The front shows the current king in his Royal Thai Air Force uniform. The same design was reissued on polymer in March 2022, so this paper note is the earlier version of the design.
Front
King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) in Royal Thai Air Force uniform with epaulettes, wings badge and aiguillette, royal cypher beneath a crown with radiating rays, Garuda (Thai national emblem) at top right, orange flower-shaped see-through window device, Thai kanok floral ornament, texts "รัฐบาลไทย" and "ธนบัตรเป็นเงินที่ชำระหนี้ได้ตามกฎหมาย", signature captions for the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Thailand.
Back
Half-length portraits of King Rama I and King Rama II facing slightly right, Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew spires at lower left, Thai mural scene (Panji/Inao tale) at lower right, Garuda emblem at top left, trident-in-chakra emblem at top right, kanok floral border, text warning that counterfeiting or altering the note is a criminal offence.
Watermark
Rama X and electrotype 20
