The story
This commemorative note marks the 20th anniversary of the 22 July 1994 coup led by Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh, which is why the date and the slogan “20 Years of Progress and Self-Reliance” are printed on the front. It was the first new note put into circulation in The Gambia in almost 20 years, and it carried the crocodile that had been the watermark on the 25 dalasis into a clear polymer window. The carmine bee-eater, a brightly colored bird that nests in holes dug into riverbanks, appears on The Gambia’s higher notes, and the back shows the State House in Banjul, the seat of the presidency. Jammeh was deposed in a contested election two years later, which he initially refused to accept, holding on until 2017, which makes this note a historical artefact of that period.
Front
President Yahya Jammeh smiling in a white cap and white robe, carmine bee-eater perched on a leafy branch, second bird in flight (faint, catalogue lists a bee-eater in flight), crocodile head inside a clear window, diamond-patterned underprint of monkeys, palm trees, huts and boats, sunburst medallion behind the date, texts “CENTRAL BANK OF THE GAMBIA”, “PROMISE TO PAY ON DEMAND THE SUM OF”, “TWENTY DALASIS”, Arabic-script value text, “22nd July 2014”, “20 Years of Progress and Self-Reliance”, signature captions “Governor” and “First Deputy Governor”.
Back
State House (Government House) in Banjul with a central entrance staircase and paved garden path, palm trees and shrubs in the grounds, crocodile head inside a clear window at right, hexagonal “20” device at top right, woven geometric border panels, text “CENTRAL BANK OF THE GAMBIA”, “TWENTY DALASIS”.
