The story
The back shows the “Hampi with Chariot” motif, chosen to depict India’s cultural heritage. The stone chariot at Hampi is part of the Vijayanagara Empire’s temple complex and stands as a symbol of architectural excellence. The chariot is actually a shrine shaped like a chariot, dedicated to Garuda inside the Vittala Temple complex; one trade site wrongly calls it a shrine to Gandhi. Hampi in Karnataka is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the frieze of elephants, horses and soldiers along the bottom border echoes the carvings found in its monuments. The front carries Gandhi’s portrait and, like other notes in the series, the Governor’s signature, and the Swachh Bharat spectacles on the back tie the note to the national cleanliness campaign.
Front
Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi with round glasses, Ashoka Lion Capital with "सत्यमेव जयते", Reserve Bank of India emblem (tiger under a palm tree), Governor’s signature with the printed name "शक्तिकान्त दास" and the title "गवर्नर", promise clause in Hindi and English, guarantee clause “GUARANTEED BY THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT”, texts "भारतीय रिज़र्व बैंक", "पचास रुपये", “RESERVE BANK OF INDIA”, captions "महात्मा गांधी / MAHATMA GANDHI", circular geometric pattern at left, ring-shaped dots at top, faint inset letter “R” beside the serial number.
Back
Stone chariot of Hampi with carved wheels and a pillared temple hall behind it, rocky hill at right, frieze of elephants, horses and soldiers along the bottom, Swachh Bharat logo (Gandhi’s spectacles) with the slogan "एक कदम स्वच्छता की ओर", language panel showing “fifty rupees” in 15 Indian languages, caption "हम्पी HAMPI", year “2023”, texts “RESERVE BANK OF INDIA”, “FIFTY RUPEES”, "भारतीय रिज़र्व बैंक".
