The story

The back shows the Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Maharashtra, chosen to showcase India’s cultural heritage. Ellora is a complex of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain rock-cut temples and monasteries carved from the hillside; its most famous temple, Kailasa, was cut from a single mass of rock. The Swachh Bharat logo uses Gandhi’s round spectacles, linking the front portrait to India’s national cleanliness campaign. The language panel in the centre of the back reflects the country’s many languages. The note is greenish-yellow, 63 mm × 129 mm, and carries the Governor Shaktikanta Das’s signature.

Front

Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi with round glasses, Ashoka Lion Capital with "सत्यमेव जयते", Reserve Bank of India emblem (tiger under a palm tree), Governor’s signature with the printed name "शक्तिकान्त दास" and the title "गवर्नर", promise clause in Hindi and English, guarantee clause “GUARANTEED BY THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT”, texts "भारतीय रिज़र्व बैंक", "बीस रुपये", “RESERVE BANK OF INDIA”, captions "महात्मा गांधी / MAHATMA GANDHI", tower-shaped motif and floral geometric patterns at left, ornamental vertical border and corner rosettes.

Back

Ellora Caves rock-cut temple with a tall carved pillar (likely the Kailasa Temple, unconfirmed), caption "एलोरा की गुफाएँ / ELLORA CAVES", Swachh Bharat logo (Gandhi’s spectacles) with slogan "एक कदम स्वच्छता की ओर", language panel showing “twenty rupees” in 15 Indian languages, texts “RESERVE BANK OF INDIA”, “TWENTY RUPEES”, "भारतीय रिज़र्व बैंक", year “2023”, decorative scroll border along the bottom.
